Family is at the centre of everything for Sam Reid. Speaking to Sydney Swans Media for the next instalment of On the Mark, it’s who he credits for his success.

Hailing from the small town of Bright in Victoria’s High Country his journey to professional sport began from a young age. Representative opportunities saw Reid commute long distances to attend events, but it wasn’t until age 16 that he thought a professional career was possible.

“My family put a lot of time into taking my brother and I to sporting events all over Victoria for basketball and football,” Reid said.

The red and white veteran is the younger brother to former Collingwood player Ben Reid. For Year 10 work experience he was exposed to the football department at the Magpies and set his sights on the AFL.

Two years later Reid was taken by Sydney with Pick 38 of the 2009 National Draft – a dream come true. In 14 seasons with the club Reid’s most defining moments haven’t occurred on the field, but meeting and marrying his wife and welcoming two children.

“I’m so grateful for my family and extended family,” he reflected, adding, “I’m very lucky my family is so strong.”

After an injury that sidelined Reid last year, the 32-year-old will be looking forward to returning for Season 2024. The 2012 premiership player will inject experience into the forward line following Lance Franklin’s retirement in 2023. His greatest strength?

“I see the positive side of things,” he reflected adding, “It can be seen as a weakness or a strength but I’m quite relaxed.”
