The Sydney Swans congratulate Sam Mostyn on her appointment as the nation’s next Governor General.

Mostyn’s affiliation with the Sydney Swans is prolific having served on the club’s Board of Directors for six seasons from 2017.

A trailblazer as the first woman appointed to the AFL Commission in 2005, Mostyn was a strong advocate for the AFL’s Respect and Responsibility Policy and as well as being a driving force in the development of the AFLW.

Her impressive resume includes roles on the boards of Virgin Australia, Mirvac, CoverMore, Transurban, the Australian Council for International Development, Carriageworks, the Diversity Council of Australia, the Climate Council, ClimateWorks Australia, and the GO Foundation, which was established by Adam Goodes and Michael O’Loughlin to support Indigenous youth through education.

Mostyn was also the inaugural chair of the Sydney Swans’ Diversity Action Plan Committee, which established the club’s plan to advocate in four key areas, including LGBTIQA+ pride, multicultural inclusion, disability empowerment and the advancement of women.

In 2021, she was honoured by being appointed an Officer in the Order of Australia (AO) for services to business and sustainability, to the community, and to women.

Sydney Swans chairman Andrew Pridham said it’s wonderful news.

“This is a terrific appointment and testament to Sam’s leadership,” Pridham said.

“Over many years Sam has given so much to the community, including our football club, where she has served on our board and as the chair of our Diversity Action Plan, among other roles.

“Her work to advocate for diversity and inclusion is an inspiration and on behalf of everyone at the club I extend our heartfelt congratulations.”
