The AFLW Sydney Swans have secured their second ever trip to the NAB AFLW Final series after first-year senior coach Colin O'Riordan and his side finished the home-and-away season in a program-high sixth position with nine wins and three losses.
Sydney previously made the finals in 2023, its second year in the AFLW. This Sunday’s Elimination Final against the Western Bulldogs will be the program's first-ever home final after two previous away fixtures.
Here is a breakdown of the Swans' recent AFLW finals history in preparation for the next instalment this Sunday.
(5) Gold Coast 6.5.41 - 9.4.58 (8) Sydney Swans – People First Stadium - Carrara Oval
Just 26 months after the Sydney Swans AFLW licence was granted by the AFL Commission, the red and white secured their first-ever finals appearance after qualifying for the finals on the final day of the home-and-away season and pipping St Kilda only on ladder percentage.
Travelling up to the fifth-placed Gold Coast, Sydney stormed on the finals stage, kicking four goals in the first quarter with two being provided by Lucy McEvoy. The Sun, who only kicked one goal in the first term, kicked the opening two of the second quarter to narrow the margin. The Swans responded with Chloe Molloy, Alisha Newman and Aimee Whelan all adding to the goal tally and giving the Swans a commanding 26-point half-time lead.
Gold Coast would surge once again, but the Swans were determined to leave the Sunshine State with a historic win. Kicking two goals across the final two quarters, the Swans would march on to the semi-finals, winning by 17 points and recording the Club's first-ever AFLW finals win.
(1) Adelaide Crows 12.10.82 - 2.3.15 (8) Sydney Swans – Norwood Oval
Having reached and progressed through the first week of the finals for the first time, the Sydney Swans' maiden AFLW finals series would not get any easier, with the red and white having to travel to Norwood Oval to take on minor premiers Adelaide, who were stunned at home by Brisbane in their qualifying final.
Adelaide would come out and kick the opening goal of the semi-final before Alisha Newman responded with Sydney’s first with ten minutes remaining in the first term. The Swans tried to match it with the Crows, with Molloy adding to the Swans' goal tally in the second. However, the Crows would outkick the Swans five goals to two in the first half before kicking another seven in the second half to run away with the semi-final tie by 67 points and end Sydney’s historic season.
This Sunday’s Elimination Final will be the Club’s third ever AFLW finals game and the first hosted in Sydney. It will be the second time the Swans have gone head-to-head with the Western Bulldogs this season, with the Bulldogs winning the home-and-away encounter by 27 points in Melbourne.
