In a first for the QBE Sydney Swans Academy, two players have been selected in the Combined High Schools (CHS) Under-15 All Australian Schoolboy Team.

Callum Mills and Tim Coenen, who have been members of the Swans Academy program since 2010, performed strongly in the recent CHS National Schoolboy Championships held in Adelaide from July 21-28.

Academy Talent ID and Operations Manager Chris Smith said the boys’ selection was a great result of the QBE Swans Academy.

“It is the first time that two players from the Swans Academy zone have been selected in the All Australian Schoolboy team,” he said.

“It is a massive credit to both boys and their efforts in the Swans Academy program to date.”

Smith said Mills, who plays for the Under-16 Willoughby Swans, is a tough and hard running player for the Swans Academy.

“Callum is a great endurance athlete who participated in last year’s off-season program and consistently out-performed the majority of boys who were several years older,” he said.

“He played as a utility player for NSW at the National Championships and performed strongly both as a mid-fielder and as a goal kicking forward.

“He also has a fantastic work ethic and attitude.”

Smith said Coenen, who played for the Southern Highland Hawks in the Illawarra before moving to the Maroubra Saints, was selected after a standout performance as a 13-year-old at the NSW State Championships.

“Tim sets a great example for the younger players at the Illawarra Academy, with his focus and competitive attitude,” he said.

“He predominantly played on the ball at the National Championships and was an extremely consistent player throughout the Carnival.

“He is a tall, athletic and competitive player who reads the play exceptionally well.”

This year’s CHS National Schoolboy Championships was also arguably the best ever performance by a NSW team, with the team recording wins over West Australia and the ACT as well as narrow losses to South Australia and Vic Metro.
