Swans need to rediscover intensity: Jolly
Sydney Swans ruckman Darren Jolly says this week's game against the Eagles is the perfect chance to get back on track
The Swans slumped to their fourth successive away loss when a rampant Geelong humbled them by 51 points at Skilled Stadium last weekend.
Jolly said the team’s propensity to lose quarters by significant margins was an issue that needed to be addressed before they faced the Eagles at ANZ Stadium.
“I don’t think we’re struggling mentally… we’ve just been up and down with our form to date, obviously winning at home but losing away.
“When we do lose, we’re losing quarters and it lets us down a lot.
“We need to knuckle down, focus on why we’re lapsing in concentration and form in those quarters and rectify it and get back to winning.”
When asked whether it was a mental or tactical problem, Jolly said the issue couldn’t be attributed to one specific area of the game.
“Either our forwards aren’t kicking goals or our backs aren’t stopping goals or our mids aren’t giving it to our forwards. It’s probably everyone across the board that needs to take responsibility.”
Emerging ruckman Mike Pyke has yet to experience a Swans-Eagles clash and Jolly had some sage advice for the Canadian as he prepared to take on West Coast star Dean Cox.
“Get your running boots on,” he said with a laugh.
“Pykey hasn’t really seen much of Dean and we’re going to sit down this arvo and watch what he does, and Lynchy as well, and we’ll try to give him a few pointers.”
While several key players in the epic 2005-06 grand finals between the two clubs have moved on, Jolly said games between the Swans and Eagles still held some magic.
“I think everyone pencils in the Sydney-West Coast game as one of those games that is just really close and the rivalry between us over the last few years has been fantastic,” he said.
“[But] I don’t think we need inspiration from rivalry games. There are obviously two standouts in Geelong and St Kilda up top and the rest are fighting for a top-eight spot.
“We’re one of them, West Coast is another and we’ll be out there fighting to get there this week.”
