Swans leave past Blues behind them

The Sydney Swans won’t be dwelling on past performances in the lead up to Sunday afternoon’s contest with Carlton at Etihad Stadium.
Swans coach John Longmire said last year’s efforts against the Blues, which saw the Swans lose both 2011 matches to Carlton, have played only a minor role in preparations for this week’s round 19 clash.
“Both teams have different teams and are in different situations compared to this time last year, so I don’t think (it’s important),” he said.
“You look at (what happened last year) a little bit, but I think form only lasts for about a month as far as what is really relevant.
“You’ve got to be mindful that you don’t look too far back.
“We need to make sure that whether it’s Carlton this week or the next game … we want to keep focused on our strong, defensive, contested type of football.”
With Carlton’s recent form at the forefront of his mind, Longmire said there is no doubt this weekend’s clash is going to be a challenge for the Swans.
The Swans coach highlighted the inclusion of key players Jarrad Waite and Kade Simpson as an added boast for the in-form Blues.
“Carlton has been able to win three of the last four with some injuries, and they’ve been able to do it pretty well,” he said.
“They get two absolute quality players back this week, so they are as strong as they’ve been over the last month and I’m certain that they’ll be giving a really good account of themselves and will be having a real crack.”
The Swans are also likely to benefit from a big inclusion this week, with ruckman Shane Mumford a chance to line up against the Blues this weekend.
Mumford, who missed last week’s match with knee bone bruising, is the likely replacement for young forward Sam Reid, who suffered a partial tear to his medial ligament in last round’s win over Gold Coast.
Longmire said Mumford had trained well so far this week and is hopeful the big man will be given the green light to play.
“(Mumford) did some training on Wednesday and pulled up really well yesterday, so at this stage we expect Shane to come in for Reidy,” he said.
“He’s only missed the one game so we expect him to come in and play full game time and play like he was playing before he was out injured.
Longmire added that the team is unlikely to see many changes to its forward structures in Reid’s absence.
“Lewis Roberts-Thomson played their last week, we’ll have a ruckman there and Goodsey will be there at times, so there are no real secrets to it,” he said.
“It’s pretty standard as far as what we deliver in our forward half and we expect them to contribute regardless of who is in or out.”
“We know that Carlton this week on their home deck with a couple of really good players in will be difficult to beat, so we want to make sure we execute the kind of footy that we want to play.”
