Sydney Swans ruckman Shane Mumford has been named in the extended squad ahead of Sunday’s clash with Carlton at Etihad Stadium.

Mumford suffered bone bruising to his left knee in the club’s round 17 win over St Kilda, and subsequently missed last weekend’s 72-point win over Gold Coast at Metricon Stadium.

Swans coach John Longmire said if Mumford gets through tomorrow’s final training session, he is expected to travel to Melbourne this weekend.

“(Mumford) did a portion of training Wednesday and pulled up really well the next day so we expect him to train tomorrow,” he said.

“If he gets through that training we expect him to be OK to play at this stage.”

Tony Armstrong, Nathan Gordon and Mitch Morton have also been added to the extended squad, with young forward Sam Reid the only out at this stage with a knee injury.

Longmire said whether another forward will come in to replace Reid, who is the Swans second highest goal-kicker for 2012 with 25 goals, will be decided after training tomorrow.

“We’ll see how the training session goes but it gives us some options there,” he said.

“The players we have selected have been playing well in the reserves and have kept their form up for a period of time and can certainly be looked at.”

It’s the first time former Richmond and West Coast forward Mitch Morton has been named in a Swans squad since joining the club during last year’s Trade Week.

Morton currently leads the NEAFL East Conference goal-kicking tally with 64 goals, and kicked nine goals last week against the Gold Coast Suns reserves.

Longmire said it wasn’t just goal-kicking that earned Morton a place in the extended squad.

“It’s not just about the goals with Morton,” he said.

“It’s part of it, but we’ve been asking him to keep on working on other areas of his game, which he’s been doing as well.

“He missed a couple of weeks with a quad injury but he’s been back for the last couple of weeks and has been contributing strongly.”

Looking ahead to Sunday’s clash with the Blues, Longmire said he is expecting a tough challenge against Carlton, who are challenging to play finals’ footy.

“Carlton is a quality team and they are likely to get a couple of good players back,” he said.

“They’re obviously fighting for a spot in the eight and they’ve won three of their last four so they’re in good form even with some of their good players missing.

“They will be desperate to stay in the hunt for the eight so it’s a real challenge for us to make sure we can continue the sort of form we want to play.”
