THE SYDNEY Swans have endured another tough road trip to Skilled Stadium, after competition benchmark Geelong produced a comfortable 51-point win over the visitors on Saturday.

The Swans 10.5 (65) went down to the Cats 17.14 (116).

The last time the Swans defeated Geelong was in round five 2006, with the red and white's most recent win at Skilled Stadium coming in round eight 1999.

Although the Swans battled manfully, especially in the first and third terms, Geelong simply had too much strength across the board. The Cats' second quarter in particular was the catalyst in their win, with seven goals to three.

It continues a topsy-turvy start to the season for the Swans, which has a 3-4 record after seven rounds.

The brightest spot for the Swans was the form of dual Brownlow Medallist Adam Goodes, who was brilliant with a team-high 27 touches, eight inside 50s and two goals.

Ryan O'Keefe (27 disposals), Brett Kirk (24), Amon Buchanan (22) and Jude Bolton (21 and 10 tackles) also worked hard. Rhyce Shaw and Marty Mattner again provided rebound from half-back and the defensive 50.

Michael O'Loughlin was the Swans' leading goalkicker with three majors.

Barry Hall had just five touches for the day, with Matthew Scarlett keeping him goalless.

For Geelong, Steve Johnson was outstanding with four goals, while Tom Hawkins, Cameron Mooney and Mathew Stokes all kicked three goals each. Joel Selwood and Joel Corey claimed an equal game-high 24 touches.

The opening term was a low-scoring affair, with just two majors posted in time-on.

Still, both sides had earlier opportunities, with seven behinds were registered before club game's record holder O'Loughlin kicked the first goal for the day at the 24-minute mark.

His major, which was started by a fine defensive effort from Mattner and ended with youngster Brett Meredith handballing over the top to O'Loughlin, was the veteran's 500th AFL goal.

Soon after Johnson, who kicked three of the first four behinds for the match, opened Geelong's account, giving the Cats a three-point break at quarter time.

The Swans regained the lead early in the second term after Heath Grundy kicked truly, but the period was dominated by Geelong, which kicked six unanswered goals, highlighted by three in a row from Johnson.

As a result the Cats jumped out to a 33-point lead, but when Jarred Moore bobbed up and O'Loughlin kicked his second in time-on, the margin was cut back to 21 points.

But when Cam Mooney landed his second before half time, the home side was back out to a 27-point buffer.

Jimmy Bartel landed the first of the second half, but the Swans soon got back in the match, with three in succession.

Goodes was significant during this period with two majors, and O'Loughlin notched his third. At the 16-minute mark, the Swans were down by just 15 points.

But the pendulum soon swung back in favour of the home side after Stokes bobbed up with two majors and Max Rooke chipped in.

This gave the Cats a 36-point lead heading into the final stanza.

And when the Cats added a further five goals to three in the final term, their undefeated streak was still alive in 2009.
