The Sydney Swans AFLW side have suffered a 66-point loss to the North Melbourne-Tasmanian Kangaroos at Punt Road on Sunday evening.

The Kangaroos showed their experience and class across the park, but despite the scoreline, Swans Head Coach Scott Gowans said his young side will learn plenty from the fixture.

"You have to be a bit honest in this competition" Gowans said.

"We knew we might struggle on the scoreboard today, so we took that out of it and concentrated on several key things and internally we got a lot out of it."

One of those 'things' was the roles that young stars Montana Ham and Sofia Hurley had, playing on their more experienced counterparts Jasmine Garner and Jemma Bruton. Both Ham and Hurley picked up 14 disposals each.

"The idea was that we wanted our younger players to learn how experienced midfield players work out of stoppages so we decided, regardless of the scoreboard we would keep those match ups, Gowans said.

"It wasn't so much a tag but a 'run with' role. I said to the girls I want you to take the game on but they will take you to the footy, we got a lot out of it. Up until three quarter time the girls had season high GPS numbers."

In defence for the Swans Ella Heads (16 disposals) and Bella Smith (14 disposals) gave plenty of effort all day as did Brenna Tarrant who took an equal game high five marks as the Kangaroos applied plenty of pressure in their forward 50 with 41 entries.

Post-game Gowans emphasised to his team the need to be pro-active after the Kangaroos dictated play across the four quarters.

"When you have five run with roles, you tend to be reactive," Gowans said.

"The next step is know who your opponent is, play on your opponent, but at the right time you have to be proactive and take the game on, regardless of what's happening. The big growth from the game was that we fell back into waiting to see what they were doing rather than being proactive with it."

Debutant Ruby Sargant-Wilson is presented her guernsey prior to the game by teammate Sarah Dargan.

A positive to come out of the game was the performance of 19-year old debutant Ruby Sargant-Wilson who had 13 disposals and four tackles and looked lively at every contest.

"Ruby is so quick across the grass," Gowans said.

"We had her pencilled in for Round 1, no problem at all, so it was great to see her out there today. She is so strong across the ground with her athletic ability and she is pretty good at pressure as well. Next week we will probably move her into the midfield group a little more and gradually build from there with her."

After back-to-back games in Melbourne, the Swans return to Sydney next week, facing the Gold Coast Suns at Henson Park on Saturday afternoon.
