For the second consecutive week the Sydney Swans will go in with an unchanged line-up, all in readiness for Saturday’s clash with St Kilda.
Boosted by last weekend’s 67-point win over Port Adelaide at the SCG, Match Committee believes they’ve found a winning formula and will take a balanced mixture of both youth and experience to Melbourne ahead of the Round 21 encounter at Etihad Stadium.
The only tweak is in the form of the emergencies with Jordan Foote, Harry Marsh and Ben McGlynn named in reserve.
Despite having extra know-how available in the form of McGlynn and Jeremy Laidler, who both performed strongly in the NEAFL on Saturday, senior coach John Longmire has decided to once again back his young team in for a chance at claiming a top-two spot.
“We have made a commitment to keep playing the players that are playing well and we will continue to do that," Longmire said.
“You need a big squad to be able to play, it is the way it has played out the last couple of weeks but I am sure there will be changes in the next couple of weeks,"
St Kilda are one of the form sides in the competition, having won four of its past five matches including a gutsy triumph over top eight contender Western Bulldogs three rounds ago.
The Saints, who Sydney hasn’t met yet in season 2016, boast a speedy midfield while their forward line has match-winners capable of kicking a big score.
Countering that, the Swans’ ball winners have been in fine touch while Longmire would be pleased with the contributions of his smaller forwards in recent weeks.
And that’s taking nothing away from his defensive group which has conceded the least points of any side in the competition.
Etihad Stadium is somewhat foreign ground to the Sydney Swans, having not played in Docklands since this year’s Round 2 clash against Carlton.
But that shouldn’t faze the visitors who are on an eight-game winning streak at the venue.
The Saints also play very well under the roof, suffering their first defeat in nine matches a fortnight ago against a North Melbourne side spurred on by Brent Harvey equalling the AFL’s games record.
In recent history, Sydney has got the better of Alan Richardson’s men in seven of the past eight matches, the last coming in Round 22 last season to the tune of 97 points.
